What is Starflower Parenting & Play?

Starflowers are one of many native wildflowers that pop up in forest floors across the northern United States. Their bright white petals curl up toward the sky, like a child’s arms communicating a request to be held by their parent or caregiver. The white of the petals stands out against the dark and rich soil of the forest floor and the deep green moss and groundcover, making them impossible to miss.

What makes the forest such a habitable space for these joyful beings? Tall trees provide just the right balance of shade and filtered sunlight. In a group, trees support one another and receive support from the undergrowth. Dead leaves that have fallen away decompose and become part of the soil that nourishes the growth of other beings in the forest.

The beauty and balance of the forest is also present in communities, where parents raise children. Children have everything they need to thrive in their natural environment, and parents give of themselves in ways that are merely part of their nature. Even the experiences that we, as adults, choose to shed, serve us, as they transform into nourishment of new growth, like dead leaves that have fallen from a branch.

At Starflower Parenting and Play, we know that you have what it takes to raise a thriving child, regardless of your knowledge, experience, or circumstances. We are here to guide you on the path of discovery—about who your child is today, who you are, as their parent or caregiver—and to support you as you grow, as you bend to receive more light, or as you fold to shelter your growing child.

  • Founder & Facilitator of Play and Learning

Most of us become parents with little to no preparation, outside of being parented ourselves. I’m honored to accompany parents in the inevitable journey of growth and development as they encounter parenting challenges. I know firsthand how trying parenting can be, and how much personal growth is required. I’m definitely not a perfect parent, but I’ve grown into a skilled partner with which you can reflect and learn. I have a Master’s degree in parenting and family education and a Minnesota state teaching license. My role is to support you as you deeply reflect on your parenting philosophy and strategies, while providing you with tools that you can utilize to further develop your parenting practice. These include strategies such as considering your child’s temperament traits, applying an understanding of child development concepts and learning ways to keep calm in the face of a dysregulated child. Whatever challenge you are facing right now is important and worth digging in to. I’m here to support you and hold you accountable.
